Tasting notes on Chateau Phelan Segur - Saint Estephe

> 2002 Phelan Segur - Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, France

2002 Phelan Segur: deep purple hue. At the opening, the nose is rather closed showing peppery flavours and torrefied wood. After airing 2002 Phelan Segur has completely changed! It has become complex with black cherries, blackberries and nutmeg. In mouth 2002 Phelan Segur expands progressively, well marked by delicate tannins. Fresh and juicy fruit. Little bitterness with a shortish, but pleasant finish. This is a delicate and elegant Phelan Segur (tasted blind I would have probably mistaken it with a Margaux). 88/100

> 2002 Phelan Segur - Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, France (2)

2002 Phelan-Segur
Decanted for 3h. Served together with 2002 Montrose.
Funky solvent at the opening which, fortunately, dissipates completely after airing.
Crimson hue. Flattering black cherry flavours and ripe red fruits, smoky and onctuous. Much softer than the usual "Saint-Estephe" type of young wine.
Well balanced and smooth with surprisingly firm tannins. Medium depth and a bit monolithic on the palate. Good fresh fruit with a slight alcoholic touch on the finish.
A pleasant Phelan Segur which nevertheless suffers from the comparison with 2002 Montrose, especially talking of its complexity which, to my view, seems a bit linear on 2002 Phelan-Segur. 87/100.

> 2003 Phelan Segur - Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, France

2003 Phelan Segur: relatively light garnet. Spicy and torrefied bouquet with beautiful ripe blackberries and raspberries. 2003 Phelan Segur has a round and balanced body with velvety tannins. In spite of the specific characteristics related to this canicular year, 2003 Phelan Segur manages to preserve a pleasant freshness throughout the palate. But 2003 Phelan Segur somewhat loses its grip on the finish. Will this simply be a momentary evolution? Quite good although one had perhaps hoped for a lusher wine in 2003. 89/100
